Filipino technologies bring home gold medals from Geneva
Homegrown Filipino technologies – Biotek M and Smart Surface, bagged the highly-coveted gold medals from the recently concluded 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva on 11-15 April 2018 at the Geneva Palexpo Arena in Geneva, Switzerland.
Represented by Dr. Rowena Guevara, Undersecretary for Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Director Edgar I. Garcia of the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI), the five-day exhibition was attended by 822 exhibitors from 40 countries in Asia, Europe, and Middle East with a thousand inventions.
The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is the biggest and most important event in the world exclusively devoted to inventions, becoming a venue for international crossroads and a meeting place for scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and economists.
Geneva, being a world business and finance center and the seat of the United Nations and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has been introducing emerging innovations within the global scientific community since 1975.
Considering the impact of science, technology, and innovation (STI) to social and economic progress as main driver in initiating sustainable development, the DOST-TAPI has been a keen supporter of technology transfer and commercialization, and promoter of innovations since the Institute’s conception.
“Our programs support the promotion of technologies and innovation system strategies through trade and exhibitions and bringing our local technologies to the international stage is already an achievement for the whole Filipino population,” said Garcia.
DOST-TAPI through the Technology Innovation for Commercialization (TECHNICOM) Program has assisted the award-winning technologies for scale-up production and roll-out, product optimization, pilot-testing and technology validation, and field testing, trainings and seminars, and production and distribution modalities development.
An interactive display platform, Smart Surface technology is an electronic sensor system which converts virtually any flat surface into an interactive one for applications in education, food service, advertising, and consumer electronics.
The emerging technology poses great opportunity to become the “first in the market” in the electronics industry where Philippine export is at about 61 percent in 2010 as revealed by the Department of Trade and Industry.
Though the TECHNICOM’s financial grant of 4.9 million pesos in 2017, Smart Surface was able to develop, pilot-test, and market-validate the industrial-grade prototype of the technology for commercialization.
Furthermore, commercialization can cope with the need of century-learners in adopting the latest technologies at par with developed economies at a more affordable cost.
The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the National Institute of Health (IMBB-NIH) to developed Biotek-M, a medical diagnostic technology for dengue.
As reports indicate that dengue had the highest incidence in the recent years, Biotek-M poses opportunities to early detection of the disease especially in the marginalized communities where dengue cases are most often reported.
TECHNICOM assisted the technology by providing an 8.1-million-peso grant for scaling-up production and rolling-out out activities nationwide from 2013 to 2015. Moreover, Biotek-M received a financial assistance from DOST-TAPI’s Venture Financing Program to purchase the equipment needed for the production of the diagnostic kit for 6.2 million pesos in 2017.
The commercialization and transfer of Biotek-M paves the way for emerging businesses in healthcare and biotechnology in the country by making impacts in societal welfare.
With the recognition given by the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the local science community through the DOST takes pride in continuing endeavors in building a responsible and sustainable society and pushing a science and technology culture in the Philippines.
